Kalpaka’s First Step to Quench the Thirst of Summer Birds

Where It All Began

On March 27, 2025, at around 3 PM, we, volunteers from Kalpaka Foundation, gathered at RBI Layout, just outside Sri Someshwara Sabha Bhavana.

We didn’t arrive with much—just a few earthen pots, a ladder, some rope… and a heart full of purpose.

Our mission was simple, yet urgent:

To begin our Bird Water Pot Project, tying 500 water pots across the city so birds and small creatures like squirrels won’t suffer in the scorching summer heat.

They can’t ask for help.

But we can still answer their thirst.

The Setup: A Moment of Joy

We placed our Kalpaka tent near the Sabha Bhavana, with sunlight streaming through the trees.

Then came a moment we’ll never forget – Our first water pot was tied, and the smile on our volunteer’s face said it all.

It wasn’t just a pot. It was the beginning of a promise – A promise to protect those who fly above us – quiet, unnoticed, and in need.

Searching for Trees, Speaking from the Heart

As that first pot swayed gently, we split into three teams:

One team carried a heavy ladder, searching for strong, safe branches to tie more pots.
Another group spoke with passersby—sharing our story and why it matters.

We discussed rising temperatures, declining bird populations, and how a single pot could save a life.

Back in the tent, a third group sat rolling seed balls—soil and native seeds pressed together with care and intention.

This is for our next big mission:

When the rains return, we’ll plant 10,000 seed balls across the city, bringing back green cover and creating shelter for all creatures.

One Pot, One Shopkeeper, One Spark of Hope

Eventually, we found a lovely spot, just outside a small juice shop.

We tied the pot.
We filled it with water.
We stepped back.
The shopkeeper smiled and said,
“Yes, I’ll refill the pot every day.”
That quiet promise meant everything.
It was kindness at its simplest and most sincere.
We thought, Maybe this will be easier than we imagined.

But it wasn’t.

We Ended with Light in Our Hearts

As darkness fell, our teams returned, still holding the remaining pots in their hands.

We couldn’t find enough safe places or enough people ready to take responsibility.

Yes, we felt a little disheartened.
But it wasn’t a failure.

Because that one pot, tied with care and filled with hope, was our first step.
And every movement starts with just that.

What Comes Next

This isn’t the end. It’s just the beginning.

We’ll return—this time with more planning and with stronger community ties.

We’ll speak to more shopkeepers, guards, and residents—anyone willing to help care for the birds.

We’ll identify safe, visible, refillable spots—and track them for action.

And we’ll keep reaching out—educating, inspiring, and reminding everyone that kindness doesn’t need much—it just needs a willing heart.

And as the clouds gather this June,

We’ll be ready to launch our 10,000 seed ball monsoon drive—restoring shade, shelter,
and green life to forgotten corners.

One Pot Still Tied: Waiting for Others to Follow

That first pot still swings gently in the breeze.
It carries more than water.
It carries a message:
That hope begins with action.
That care begins with us.
We started with one. We’re coming back with many more.
And you can be a part of it.
Just ₹25 helps us place another pot for one more thirsty bird.
Will you help us tie the next one?

Want to help, but don’t know where to start? Volunteer with us.
